Remaining Happier - Chapter 26
My Commitments
Congratulations! To arrive at our final unit you have shown tremendous engagement, open mindedness and resilience. You are a super star!
Hopefully, you have now equipped yourself with a variety of tools and approaches that you are already using to boost your wellbeing.
Let’s take a moment to think back all the way to unit one, Making Positive Change. At the beginning of our programme we discussed hedonic adaptation and ‘espoused’ theories. Hedonic adaptation is where, following the introduction of a new thing or circumstance into our lives, our happiness levels are given a boost before gradually returning to their original levels. Meanwhile, ‘espoused’ values are those principles and behaviours that we know will make us happier, but we still don’t put into regular use.
So as we approach the end of your first visit to the Positive Change Project, it is worth asking ourselves what can we do to turn ‘espoused’ values into ‘in use’ values, and what can we do to limit hedonic adaptation?
Let’s start with some pledges and plans that we can make to help our positive change become sustainable in the long term. We call this process My Commitments.
Units two, three and four were each designed around a clear theme. Unit two was about rewiring your daily habits and routines. Unit three focused on developing and maintaining positive relationships with others. Unit four examined how to cope with stress and anxiety.
Let’s do a WOOP analysis in which we devise at least one wish for something we learnt in each of those units. The only difference this time is that we’re going to add an extra stage that asks you to revisit your WOOP at a specific time of your choosing, where you can check in, see how things are going and make any adjustments that may be required to fulfil your wish.
